Dumbbell Scaption

Dumbbell Scaption is a beginner-level isolation in the strength category that primarily works the shoulders. It also recruits the traps. It is performed with dumbbells.

How to do it

  1. 1This corrective exercise strengthens the muscles that stabilize your shoulder blade. Hold a light weight in each hand, hanging at your sides. Your thumbs should pointing up.
  2. 2Begin the movement raising your arms out in front of you, about 30 degrees off center. Your arms should be fully extended as you perform the movement.
  3. 3Continue until your arms are parallel to the ground, and then return to the starting position.

Tips and common mistakes

Sets and reps

For hypertrophy: 3–4 sets × 8–12 reps with 1–2 reps in reserve (RPE 7–9) and 1–2 minutes rest. For strength: 3–5 × 4–6 with longer rest.
